Window Ware take on the Bedford river festival raft race

It wasn't just the boiling temperatures that tested the mettle of the Window Ware team in last weekend's Bedford River Festival Raft Race!

Scorched by the sun, drowned by super soakers and buckets of water, as well as bombarded by eggs and flour - the crew of this year’s Bedford River Festival Raft Race were under fire from all sides! Despite the heat and the relentless onslaught, Operation Window Ware kept their cool and managed to stay afloat to cross the finish line with considerable aplomb! Well, as much poise as you might expect from a bunch of soggy, sore and crusty, blood-stained doctors and nurses!

Raft race rivalry

“We took a proper pelting”, insisted bedraggled crew member, Laura Mooney! “In an attempt to take us out as competition, other teams tried to flood the hull by throwing full buckets of water over us! Thank heavens, our clever raft builders had packed our craft with plenty of polystyrene which proved too buoyant to sink. That’s great, because we had no intention of going down with our ship!”

Rowing for charity and potato chips!

We’re glad our intrepid team has returned to us relatively unscathed! Massive thanks to Tara and Andrew for their ingenious raft building abilities, and of course, our plucky power-paddlers – Laura, Alex, Sarah, Demi, Karl and Tara (not content with construction, she joined the crew too) for rising to the raft race challenge! Window Ware’s MD, Sam, was also there cheering them on from the river bank, ready to rehydrate and refuel our weary watermen and women after the race with a well-earned beer and a bag of crisps.

Motivated to raise money

As all principled challengers will tell you, it’s not the winning but the taking part that counts. So even though we missed out on the prizes this year, we’re still proud to have been a part of this colourful community event. At the end of the day, it’s all about supporting local charities and we’re pulling out all the stops to hit our fund-raising target of £200. If you’re reading this and feeling generous, why not dig dip and visit our Virgin Money Giving page to donate? Every penny you give will make a real difference to people in need in our neighbourhood. Thank you!
