How to Replace A Cylinder Door Lock

1 January 2014

What you will need:

  • A screw driver
  • A ruler

Step 1: Remove the existing cylinder

  • Open the door.
  • Place the key in the cylinder.
  • In between the door handle, level with the cylinder you’ll see a screw. You will need to remove this screw. Remember to keep this in a safe place.
  • Once unscrewed the cylinder can be gently pulled out of the door.

Step 2: Select a replacement cylinder

  • Once the cylinder has been removed using your ruler measure points A and B on the diagram.
  • When selecting a replacement cylinder, you should consider the window and door industries standards. You can find an overview to these standards here.
  • Identify a cylinder that best suits your requirements. Ensure that the measurements and shape of the cylinder are the same as the existing.
  • You can view our wide range of cylinders here.

Please note – fitting a 3* cylinder is one of the easiest ways to improve security. Simply follow the above steps and search for a suitable 3* replacement. The security of the handle and cylinder section of the door will then conform to the TS007 standard. Please refer to our industry standards overview for more information.

Step 3: Fit the replacement cylinder

  • Open the door. Place the key in the existing cylinder. Unscrew the screw and remove the old cylinder.
  • Place the key in the new cylinder.
  • For high security cylinders, ensure the sacrificial break point groove is nearer to the external side of the door.
  • Slide the cylinder into place.
  • Secure it in place with the screw. This may require some movement to align the screw holes.
  • Check the door and cylinder are operating as desired.

Follow these 3 steps to replace a door cylinder:

  1. Remove the existing cylinder.
